There’s no question that social media is really starting to take hold in the field of senior living. Just go on Facebook and search for “senior living” and see how many communities pop up. You’d find similar results by searching on YouTube and Twitter. Certainly there’s value in generating awareness for your community and also in building relationships. But perhaps one of the most important benefits is the link between social media and search engine optimization (SEO). Improving your search rankings is crucial to generating traffic and ultimately getting people to your community or company website.

Crispin Sheridan recently wrote a blog, SEO and Integration with Social Media, which provides a basic overview and helps explain why and how it’s important to incorporate SEO strategy into your social media strategy, as well.

Senior living communities are seeing results from their social media efforts — noticing that Facebook is among their top referrals to websites, seeing more engagement from adult children and more. What results have you experienced from incorporating social media into your overall communications plan?

  2. We have found that the children and grandchildren of residents in our communities LOVE being able to connect on Facebook. Even though the residents themselves might not be Facebook-savvy, their families can post messages and photos for them, and our community staff print those pages and hand deliver them to the residents. It’s good to remember that the point is not to get people to embrace technology; the point is to use technology to strengthen connections between people.

@Melanie, I think it is great that staff prints off the pages for those residents not online. Perfect example for others on how to keep the connection going.
